In spite of our efforts to save the Bloedel Conservatory, and despite the possible illegality of the decision to close or repurpose the Conservatory, the Vancouver Park Board is looking for proposals to manage or operate the Conservatory in a similar or new capacity. This leaves the Bloedel exposed to privatization and loss as a public floral Conservatory. Expressions of Interest will be accepted by the Vancouver Park Board until April 30, 2010. The Bloedel Conservatory will remain open while the Park Board reviews all Expressions of Interest.
Please continue to visit the Bloedel Conservatory during the Olympic and Paralympic Games! Admission to the Conservatory remains at $5 and parking in Queen Elizabeth Park is back to regular hours and rates.
We have successfully delayed closure of the facility for now, but the threat of permanent loss as a green oasis is still very real. The Park Board will consider all proposals, including private and corporate plans for other uses. Vancouver could still very easily lose its Conservatory forever.
The Friends of the Bloedel will prepare an Expression of Interest for the Vancouver Park Board. We will offer to work collaboratively with the Park Board in support of the Bloedel Conservtory for the following purposes:
1. To fundraise in support of the Bloedel Conservatory.
2. To provide marketing and public relations.
3. To improve revenue streams.
4. To develop and provide public programming and education.
5. To protect the legal interests.
6. To provide similar or related services as recommended by our membership and executive.
We are staging a fundraising drive to fulfill our stated purposes. Our goal is to raise $250,000 by April 30, 2010. Please click on "DONATE" above to learn how you can make a donation to save the Conservatory. Thank you for your support!
